Alexander is a father of four children between the ages of 12 and 3 years old. He lives with his family in their rural home in the Kisii area of Kenya where he has practiced mixed farming for ten years. Farming is his sole source of income.
Alexander has requested a loan of 62,400 Kenyan shillings from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He is focusing on using his farming income to educate his children, three of whom are already in school. He also hopes to run a transport business in the future to help supply his produce to the market. He says the poor state of the roads remains a challenge, as farmers are compelled to supply local markets which have very low prices for farm produce.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
