Teresa is a resident of Kisii, in Kenya, and has been in farming for 6 successive years with her farm producing mainly beans, maize, and nappier grass for the local market. She is 47 and married with six children, three of whom are still schooling. She also runs a cereal retail shop in the local market.
Teresa has requested a loan of 90,000 Kenya shillings (KES) from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to help her buy a dairy cow at 80,000 KES as well as renovate her dairy unit at a cost of 10,000 KES. She says the milk produced will be sold to meet other family needs besides supplementing the family's daily meals.
Her main farming challenges include mainly poor market prices for farm produce, as well as occasional droughts and pests that destroy farm produce.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
