As a former soldier in the Canadian Army, Robert, 45, wanted to use his training and experience to serve others in the community and opened Specialized Security Group three years ago. The private security company caters to individuals or groups who need security.

What separates his security company from others within the San Antonio and Selma areas is that Robert only hires military veterans and pays better than 99 percent of other security companies. “We offer better services at a better rate,” Robert said.

Regularly, Robert employs 10 other security officers per job, but he said he has about 50 on stand-by. If he lands the next two contracts, Robert said he will be able to hire more officers.

One of Robert’s partners informed him about ACCION Texas Inc., which influenced him to obtain a loan from ACCION rather than a traditional bank.

The loan helped tremendously, Robert said. It paid for insurance, licensing and uniforms.

Robert is a father of two children who financially depend on him. “I appreciate ACCION,” he said. “Without it a lot of people would be suffering.”
