Aida Magdalena's story

Every two weeks the members of the village bank known as Estancia Vieja meet in the neighborhood of Estancia Vieja, located in the Colon parish of the city of Portoviejo. This area is home to humble people who work in agriculture and general trade.

Aida lives in this area. She is 48 years of age, married and has five children with her husband. Three of her children are adults, while the other two are 16 and 15 years of age. These younger children are at school and live with her. Her husband is a caretaker.

Aida is a housewife, and to obtain her own income and help her husband with the household expenses, she sells costume jewelry and accessories for women. At the weekends and during fair time she goes to other cantons, where she sets up a small stall to sell her products. These include bracelets, necklaces, bows, hair accessories and other items. She has worked in this way for more than five years, and has been very successful.

She plans to use this loan is to buy costume jewelry and accessories for women. Aida has been with the communal bank since it was first set up, and she likes it because the loans obtained have been able to finance her business. Her dream is to have a car to use when selling her products.
