This bank is called “Emprendedores Lord Cochrane” (Lord Cochrane Entrepreneurs), and has 17 members involved in different businesses: plant sales, stationery items, traditional woven products, tailoring, jewelry and accessory sales, among others. All of the members are from the city of Valparaíso.

Geanella, who is the secretary of the village bank, is seated first from right to left in the photo, and is wearing blue pants, a red striped top and a grey jacket. She has sold traditionally crafted products and stationery items for the past six years, and works alongside her mother. She buys the goods she needs for her business in Santiago, where there is greater variety and costs are lower.

Geanella plans to use the loan to buy vests of different styles and sizes for her customers. Her future goals include continuing with her business and increasing her income, enabling her to have a better quality of life. She lives with her husband, who is a government employee and works for the navy, as well as her mother and grandmother. She is also expecting a baby. Her dream is to have her own home.

Geanella is very happy and thankful for the loan and services offered by Fondo Esperanza. She also says that she feels very good about the meetings and the group of people included in the village bank, as they are all united.

Valparaíso is located 120 kilometers to the north-west of Santiago. It is the regional capital and home to the country’s legislative authorities. It is Chile’s main port, and has a wide variety of beautiful, picturesque spots, such as the home of poet and Nobel prize winner Pablo Neruda.

Este Banco se llama “Emprendedores Lord Cochrane” está conformado por 17 emprendedores quienes se dedican a diferentes rubros, entre los cuales encuentran; ventas de plantas, bazar, artesanía en tejidos, confección de ropa, venta de accesorios en joyas. Todos ellos pertenecientes a la ciudad de Valparaíso.
Geanella, Secretaria del Banco Comunal, quien en la foto se encuentra sentada, ocupando el primer lugar de derecha a izquierda, viste pantalón azul, con una polera de rayas color rojo y encima una chaqueta color gris.
Ella se dedica al rubro de artesanía y Bazar, se ocupa de este negocio desde hace 6 años y trabaja junto a su madre.
La mercadería que va necesitando para su negocio la compra en Santiago, por la variedad de productos y a un menor costo.
Con el crédito comprara chalecos de diferentes modelos y tallas para su clientela.
Sus metas son continuar con el negocio y aumentar sus ingresos, así con esto optar a una mejor calidad de vida.
Geanella vive junto a su marido quien se desempeña como Funcionario de la Armada, además su madre, abuela y su futuro hijo. Sus sueños son poder tener una casa propia.
Geanella está muy contenta y agradecida del crédito y servicios otorgados por Fondo Esperanza, Además comenta que se siente muy bien con las reuniones y grupo del Banco Comunal, ya que son unidos.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
