James is a farmer with ten years of experience. He has been producing and selling fruits and vegetables to the local market. He is married with one child age 4 years.
James has requested a loan of 30,000 Kenya shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy water pipes, which he will use to set up an irrigation system in his farm. He hopes to be able to buy a car to ease the supply of his farm produce, both transporting from the farm during harvest as well as delivering them to the markets.
He says the high costs of farm inputs and lack of financial resources has been the major challenges farmers have to grapple with.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
