Grace is a resident of Kitale in Western Kenya, where she has been practicing mixed farming for 20 years. Her farm currently produces milk, maize, tomatoes, and vegetables, which she sells at local markets. She says her farming income has helped her to bring up her family of eight children, two of whom are still in school.
Grace has requested a loan of 104,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure two dairy cows. She says she has been eager to improve the breeds of her dairy cows, and this loan will help her realize that dream. She also hopes to construct a zero grazing unit on her farm.
She says dairy animal diseases remain the most challenging aspect of farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
