Milkah is a resident of Murang’a in Central Kenya where she lives with her family of three children between the ages of four and six. She has been in farming for six years. She sells her produce, which include milk, coffee, and bananas, to the local market. Her farm is run with the help of one farmhand engaged on a permanent basis.
Milkah has requested a loan of 40,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a water tank. She says this will reduce the cost of running the farm with water that is supplied by water vendors. She plans to install an irrigation system on her farm to supply water in all seasons.
She laments of fluctuation of market prices for farm produce.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
