Cristina
Cristina is 30 years old and currently lives with her husband and 5-year old daughter in the Horquetas de Sarapiqui area. She has an important historical role in Fundación Mujer as she was the reason a group of young entrepreneurs was formed in the community. They paid off their loan promptly. Cristina has decided to seek a larger loan. Last time she used the money to raise chickens and has been doing this for three years. As she and her husband also sell brand name sneakers, the new loan will be used to buy these items, and Cristina will continue to raise chickens.

This job has enabled her to earn money to pay off the loan and improve the standard of living of her family. Now she wishes to invest in the business again as she has orders from customers in the area. This would bring more money into the household. Cristina’s daily chores consist of getting her daughter ready for school, feeding the chickens and a pig she is also raising. In the afternoon she and her husband take the family vehicle and go off to sell both the chickens and the sneakers in nearby communities.

This will be Cristina’s third individual loan. She has demonstrated responsibility in repaying the money each time, and her business is doing well according to data collected in a visit to her small business.
She owns henhouses and a fridge for the chicken food. A neighbourhood restaurant and coffee shop buy chickens from her, as do people in the community. The sales of sneakers are done by both her and her husband alongside sales of chickens. She has had a group of regular customers for five years, and she hopes to make a large investment so she can fill her customers’ orders. The sneakers are brand name obtained from the border at Paso Canoas, Panama, for a competitive price on credit.

More information about this loan

In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.
