“AMIGAS ALEGRES” (Happy Friends) is a community bank that will start its first cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the “Santiago II” office. It is composed of eight members, and it is managed by a board of directors led by Claudia. The members of this community bank engage in different activities, such as liquor store, services, retail and production.

Claudia says that a few years ago she was a member of another community bank working with Pro Mujer, where she had been invited by a friend. She is currently running the liquor store that she has opened many years ago.

The loan she is now requesting will be used to increase her working capital by purchasing liquors: she buys them from sellers in the town of El Alto, to then sell them in her stall. This activity helps her supporting her family, as she is married and has three children.

When one asks her what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the seminars about health as well as those about the loans.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
