The client is part of a business community. She's an energetic woman and an experienced entrepreneur. She's 36 years old and the mother of eleven children. On two occasions, she gave birth to twins.

She's a seller at the central market Virunga. Her husband is a civil servant with the state's land registry office. She started her business on her own funds, that she got from her husband after their wedding.

On a regular basis, she receives a loan from Kiva's partner, Hekima, to strengthen her business. She just received her eighth loan. During the previous loan cycle, her sales declined measurably, following a financial crisis looming on the horizon after the country's elections.

Consequently, she decided to seek a smaller amount for this new cycle. She will use this new loan to purchase one bale of secondhand clothing, and use the remainder to pay her children's school expenses. In addition, she would like to see her children grow and buy a land lot.

She thanks Hekima for its action aimed at making low-income women self-sustaining.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
