Maria Celina
María is a great entrepreneur who has had to overcome great adversities in her life; her willingness to work and to get ahead has been fundamental for her to continue making progress in life.

María is a single mother, head of household. She has two daughters whose father abandoned them some time ago and they currently have no news of him. Before the father of her daughters left them, María had a job in a clothes making firm that generated income she could contribute toward household expenses thus offering good quality of life at home. However, due to the father of her daughters’ abandonment she found herself obliged to generate all the income by herself so what she earned from her job was insufficient to cover all household expenses.

Hoping to generate higher income, María decided to start her own business seeking better economic opportunities and this is how she set up a sewing workshop at home where she makes underwear. She works hard every day and thanks to this she’s been able to offer her two daughters a better quality of life.

Because she has large pending orders, María is looking for a loan that will make it possible for her to buy supplies and raw materials needed to make the items to respond to her customer orders. In this way she will be able to continue to grow in her business and be able to generate more employment since she’s currently able to provide one job which provides a good opportunity for one other person. In addition, María dreams with getting ahead with her daughters and to have a great business one day.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
