Nicolas is a rice farmer. This loan cycle is his third one with the microfinance institution ACB. He is going to use his loan to buy some fertilizer and to cover the cost of labor.

His strategy for the growth of his business is to use select seeds and chemical fertilizers for his rice farming. In the next few years, Nicolas would like to be the No. 1 farmer in his region. With the profits, he plans on educating his children.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
