Jet Group
In this Group: Fatime, Ayşe Betül , Sevtap , Fatma
Betül, born in 1978 in Istanbul, is the mother of two. Her husband is a laborer at a factory. While Betül lives a very humble life, she has big dreams that she says she has come closer to reaching after encountering Maya. She began working by doing sales from her own house via catalogues for an undergarments and sleepwear company. After traveling from house to house and gathering a particular group of customers, she formed her own group of salespeople and started to make a profit from their sales. She then applied to Maya with the group she formed from her salespeople and took out a loan, which expanded her sales by bringing in more products. As a result, Betül,expanded her own business, and the group members were able to better support their families. Now Betül has realized another of her dreams, thanks to Maya. After noticing that there was no sewing-supply store in her neighborhood, she opened one of her own, not wanting to miss this opportunity. Now she will continue better doing the work she does both at home and as a shop owner from her shop. This is the group's first loan through Kiva.

About Maya

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
