Jalapilla Group
In this Group: Eva, Veronica, Ana , Maria De Jesus
The “Jalapilla” group is composed of four cheerful, hardworking women. Each of them has an economic activity she carries out in order to have more income and provide her family with a better quality of life. This group is located in the community of Aserradero ten minutes from the municipality of Acatlán de Pérez Figueroa in the state of Oaxaca. This community is noted for sugarcane production and its residents work planting and cutting sugar cane.

Eva is one of the members of this group. She’s 38 years old and is a single mother of a 15 year old son, Diego, who attends secondary school in Acatlán.

Eva tells us that she started out working outside the home as an employee but one day decided to sell underwear via catalogue and noted that she earned more this way and had more time to spend with her son and educate him. She’s been selling underwear for more than two years now and she comments that she sells house to house.

She takes the catalogues to her customers, takes their orders, places them with her suppliers and the when the orders are delivered to her she delivers them and collects payment. She sells in her community and also goes out to other towns like Cosolapa, Texonapa, Refugio and Motzorongo. She tells us that she decided to start to work because she’s a single mother and she had to clothe, shoe and feed her son. Eva also has a small corral in her back yard where she has some sheep she raises to then sell. She needs the loan to buy catalogues, underwear and feed for her sheep.

Eva hopes that with this loan her business will prosper and she will be able to use her profits to sell sheets and bedspreads. She wants to keep working because she wants her son to have a profession in the future. Eva is grateful to the Fundación for the opportunity it’s giving her with this loan so that her business can make progress and for the trust placed in her by granting the loan.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
