Rosa Mercedes
Rosa is 67 years old, but has the joy and spirit of a young, 20 year old. With much effort, she raised 4 children and helped them get ahead in life, all on her own. Her house is in the city of Ica, well-known for for having the most important tourist attractions in the country, like the Huacachina Lagoon and the Witch of Cachiche, which are visited by an infinite number of tourists at any time of the year. Like a good Peruvian, she likes typical Peruvian food and counts “noodles with potatoes from Huancayo” (noodles with boiled and sliced potatoes with a spicy cheese sauce) as her favorite.
Her parents weren’t financially stable, so she has only a high school education, but she would have enjoyed studying to be a teacher.

Rosa wakes up early every day to sell her grocery items and works about 10 hours a day, attending up to 30 customers in a day. She believes her business is going well because she sells good quality products, treats her customers well and has good prices.

Rosa is grateful to the Kiva lenders because thanks to their help she’ll be able to buy shelving to exhibit her products and merchandise. This will also help her keep her business organized and clean and she’ll be able to offer more variety of products to her customers, which will allow her to continue fighting every day to achieve her biggest dream: to open a supermarket.
