Serap's Group
In this Group: Serap , Esra, Berrin
Serap is 32 years old and was born in Eskisehir. She is one of those ladies who started working as soon as she had completed her education. As a matter of fact, she had been working while studying on order to contribute to her family’s budget. Since she had devoted all her life to working, she had postponed the idea of marriage and only recently became engaged. As an eagerly devoted business woman following her graduation, she started working in the printing shop of her uncle without knowing anything about the business. Due to her eagerness and perseverance within a short time, she mastered the printing business. In time, when her uncle started a new business, he turned over the management and ownership of the printing house to Serap. Naturally she had some financial difficulties in the beginning and she still has, but she overcomes these difficulties with the support of Maya. She developed her business of the printing shop into the organization business, started entering into areas such as wedding invitations, and wedding candies. Currently she has very good customer connections. She will use the current loan from Maya via Kiva to buy paper and edge cutting machines, and stamps. These machines will help her to decrease her costs by keeping certain jobs in house which she had been previously outsourcing, thus increasing her profit. She always expresses her gratitude to Maya for their support.

The two other members of the group are marketing the products of a cleaning company both from home and from the store (with the support of Serap). They are thankful for the Maya loans, which provide them with working capital that enables them to buy products in bigger wholesale lots.

About Maya

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya borrowers are part of lending groups, but are posted to Kiva as individuals. Therefore, lenders are exposed to additional risk of default in the event that a member of this borrower's group defaults on her loan. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
