Oscar
Oscar is thirty-three and lives with his family in the community of Santa Teresita in the province of Cartago. The city of Cartago was founded in 1563 by Spanish conquistador Juan Vásquez de Coronado. It acted as the Costa Rican capital until 1823 and was the seat of the first permanent international court in history, the Court of Cartago. Its mountainous relief formed by two ranges, the Central and the Talamanca.

Oscar needs a motorcycle because he's a plumber and needs to transport himself long distances from one place to another, and the bike will make his job easier. Getting this kind of transportation is also important because the neighbors have been very satisfied with his service and demand is becoming stronger and stronger.

At this time Oscar is seeking a loan for 750,000 colones to buy a motorcycle to get to work every day and to give the best support and attention to his job.

Oscar is a member of the El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba Communal Bank, one of EDESA's 150 member organizations in Costa Rica. This will be Oscar's first loan and he says that he hopes to be able to continue growing as a micro entrepreneur and to make the business a success. He also stresses that thanks to these kinds of organizations and their facilitation of credit he is able to dedicate more time to productive activities.

Oscar tiene 33 años de edad y vive con su familia en la comunidad de Santa Teresita, en la provincia de Cartago. La Ciudad de Cartago fue fundada en 1563 por el conquistador español Juan Vázquez de Coronado, fungió como capital de Costa Rica hasta 1823 y fue sede de la primera corte internacional permanente de la historia mundial, la Corte de Cartago. Su relieve montañoso está formado por dos cordilleras: la Central y la cordillera de Talamanca.

El necesita una motocicleta ya que trabaja como fontanero y necesita trasladarse de un sector a otro ya que son distancias largas, esto le facilitará el trabajo. Además le es muy importante adquirir este medio de transporte, ya que la demanda es cada vez más fuerte y los vecinos de la comunidad se han sentido satisfechos con el servicio brindado.

Lo que en estos momentos solicita Oscar es un crédito de setecientos cincuenta mil colones (¢750.000) para comprar una motocicleta para movilizarse a su trabajo todos los días, y para dar el mejor mantenimiento y asistencia posible a su proyecto.

Oscar forma parte de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba, una de las 150 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer crédito y dice que con el espera poder seguir creciendo como microempresario y sacar su negocio adelante. También destaca que gracias a este tipo de organizaciones y medios facilitadores de crédito puede dedicar más tiempo a las actividades productivas.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
