The "San Francisco" communal bank was formed by bringing together several neighbors in the city of Santaní. All the members of the group are self-employed, and carry out activities such as raising and selling of animals. The members created a very close-knit group, able to jointly undertake activities that strengthen their partnership.

Cornelia belongs to the group, and she tells us that she raises and sells animals such as pigs, chickens, cows, and others. She says she has several customers who buy animals from her, which are later sold for slaughter. The work she does is very hard, and requires not only physical, but also mental effort.

She is applying for the loan in order to buy balanced feed for her animals, as she doesn't want them to lack food. Cornelia is very grateful to get this opportunity for progress.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
