John is a resident of Muranga in Central Kenya where he has practiced mixed farming for over twelve years. He currently employs one farmhand and produces eggs, milk and other horticultural products. He is married with three children all of school-going ages.
John has requested a loan of 95,000 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a generator and a water pump for irrigation at his farm. He believes sufficient water at the farm will help him produce a variety of fruits and improve his income which will in turn enable him educate and feed his children.
He says intervention by Juhudi Kilimo with this loan is timely since inadequacy of funds and poor markets for the farm produce remain the leading challenges to farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
