Yunuslar Group
In this Group: Saniye, Ayşe, Saliha
Saniye (in the brown sweater on the left) is 35 years old and single. She was born in İstanbul. She always took responsibility for her whole family, quickly becoming the family matriarch. She earns her living selling clothing, pajamas, towels, etc. in the city bazaar, which she has been doing for eight years.

Saniye had many difficulties when she first started working, but now she has succeeded in streamlining her work and has now advanced so much that she takes her siblings to the bazaar and bought a car. When she started, she did not have a place in any bazaar or a definite customer base. She just knew she had to work. She could not imagine that the situation she finds herself in now would come.

To build up her customer base, Saniye went door to door with a bag; she did not have capital so she would just buy three to five items to sell and contribute to the household. In time, she was able to find her own space at the city's bazaars; she sent her siblings to every one of those bazaars. At that point, she needed a vehicle because their biggest problem was carrying the goods they brought to the bazaar. She says she created things out of thin air through borrowing.

Saniye always had problems getting inventory until she came into contact with Maya. Now she has been able to buy herself a car, achieving the most important step for her. Saniye still has expenses, such as her car payments and buying gas, but she is current with her payments.

Saniye is requesting a loan from Maya, which she will use to buy clothing, pajamas, and towels. She buys wholesale with the loan and is able to repay it before the due date.

About Maya

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
