Feliza is one of the members of the group “El Encanto”, which is comprised of 7 people. Each one carries out a different activity in order to generate more income and improve their standard of living. This group is located in a sugar cane zone, only 15 minutes from the La Margarita refinery, one of the main sugar producers in the region.

Feliza is 66 years old, only studied to first grade, and is a widow. She had 7 children who are now married, and tells us that more than 8 years ago, when her husband was still alive, she installed a small laundry in her house in order to earn a little extra money. Now that her husband has passed away, she continues with this business and is very content that her husband left her a good business with which she has been able to get ahead. Over time, her business has grown and gained customers. She opens very early every day, and her customers are happy with her service since she always tends to them well and their clothes are always ready when they need them. Feliza will invest this loan into the purchase of a variety of detergents (bleach, fabric softener, bar and powdered soap) and to maintain her machinery. She hopes that, with this loan, she can continue to grow her business since she would also like to start a dry cleaning service.

The other members of the group are:

Mirna – poultry sales
Ramiro – general store
Margarita – sells Mexican snack foods
Sergio – taxi driver
Juan Carlos – hamburger sales
Rosa – fruit and vegetable sales

This group thanks the foundation for the loan it has granted to them.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
