Makvala
Makvala is 56 years old and from a village of the Kakheti district. She lives with her husband Eldar. The only source of income for the family is a small plot of land that they own on which they grow vegetables. Makvala sells their harvested vegetables at the local market. The average monthly income of the family is less than 200 Laris which is hardly enough for food.

Makvala is requesting a loan to purchase a truck trailer. Eldar has a truck and he will use the trailer to provide transportation services to local farmers. Makvala will receive her loan from Credo as part of a start-up loan program, initiated jointly by Kiva and Credo. Start-up loans provide business loans and credit at lower interest rates to the rural poor who do not have access to many credit programs as they are regarded as high-risk borrowers because of low income. As a result of this investment, Makvala's family income will significantly increase and the family will be able to combat poverty.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of Credo's startup loan program targeting particularly vulnerable clients who live at the subsistence level and have been unable to obtain credit due to lack of income from an existing business. This program offers them a longer repayment term and an annual interest rate that is 5% lower than the standard interest rate. By funding this loan, you are supporting a program that gives borrowers a second chance to start and grow small businesses. This has the potential to alleviate the effects of poverty, significantly improving borrowers' incomes and their families' quality of life. Learn more about Credo's startup loan program on the Kiva Blog.
