The communal bank 'Nueva Visión' [New Vision] will start it's first cycle in 'Pro Mujer' as part of the 'Centro Focal de Santiago II'. The group is made up of thirteen members and has a governing board which is led by Teodora. The members of the group have a variety of businesses, including: selling panty hose, shoe making, selling drinks, selling underwear, weaving and selling blankets.

Teodora told us that she just recently became a member of the communal bank. She has a business weaving and selling blankets which she has been doing for many years. She learned the business from her neighbor. The loan from this cycle is to expand her business, which she will do by buying wool at wholesale. She buys her wool from the market in El Alto and later uses it to weave products which she sells from her store front. This allows her to support her family; she is married with five children.

When asked what she likes about 'Pro Mujer' she says she likes the trainings that focus on health and loans.

Not pictured is Emilia, she had an appointment when the picture was taken.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
