Tabitha is a resident and a farmer in the Kitale area of Western Kenya. She is 46 and married with 7 children aged between 25 and six years with four still of school-going age. She has been in farming for 20 years and now runs the farm with the help of one farmhand. She sells her produce of tomatoes, maize, bean and eggs to the local markets.
Tabitha has requested loan of 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to boost her poultry farming business by buying more birds and expanding the poultry housing unit. She says the income will help her meet her family's basic needs especially paying school fees for her children. She hopes to become a major supplier of poultry products. She, however, laments the high costs of poultry feeds.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
