This communal bank is called “Emergente” (Emergent) and it’s formed by 18 entrepreneurs who carry out a variety of lines of work among which are found clothing sales, appliance sales, seed business and food preparation, among others. All are from the city of Talca.

Myrtha, communal bank president, appears in the photo in the middle of the second row wearing a black shirt and jeans. Her hair is dark brown and in a short bob. As a reference, she appears next to an entrepreneur wearing a green shirt.

Myrtha is a merchant, specifically selling new women’s clothing. She’s been working in this business for four years. She sells her merchandise in a locale located in a street market. She works non-stop from 10am until 8pm. She buys her products in “Barrio Patronato,” the commercial area for clothes. She will use the loan to buy women’s clothes.

One of the motivating factors for Myrtha to continue with the business is that it allows her to cover her daughters’ higher education costs; they are attending University. Myrtha is a widow and has three daughters. Her dream is that they can access education and that they become professionals.
She is very happy and grateful for the help provided by Fondo Esperanza because it will make it possible for her to invest in her business.

With respect to the training, it’s helped her learn new business strategies in accounting and administration. On the other hand, she feels very comfortable and happy with her group in the communal bank that she’s part of because the meetings are very pleasant and the group is also very united.

Talca belongs to the Maule region located in the center of the country. It’s the administrative, economic and cultural center of the region being the most important city in the Chilean Central Valley.

There is a curious phrase in Chile about Talca: “Talca, París y Londres” (Talca, Paris and London). Among the myths concerning it some say that it’s a derivation originally made by an Englishman: “Talca parece Londres” (Talca seems like London) because of the abundant fog that frequently blankets the city in winter very much like in the United Kingdom.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
