Scholastica is a widow and a mother of seven children, the last three of whom are still in school. She has been in farming for 30 years and produces mainly maize, passion fruits and tomatoes with the help of two farmhands.
Scholastica has requested a loan of 100,000 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo to help her start a poultry farming business (for 70,000 KES) and build a dairy unit (for 30,000 KES). She has a target of growing a farm of 5000 birds. She says the loan will help her buy birds and put up a housing unit for the birds. She adds the income will go into meeting her family needs.
She laments the difficulties of animal diseases and a poor road network.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
