Robert is a resident of Kitale, Western Kenya. He is 62 and married with nine children, the last three of whom are of school-going age. He has been in farming for 39 years, mainly producing maize but currently producing vegetables as well in order to improve his family's life.
Robert has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry birds for a venture into poultry farming. He will use the extra income to educate his children. He goal is to own five dairy cows in five years.
Robert says poor road networks and common animal diseases are the major challenges he faces in the farming business.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
