The “Pentalfa” communal bank will start its first cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Villa Tejada Focal Center. It has eleven members led by a governing board headed by Alejandra. The members of the communal bank carry out a variety of occupations. Among them we have: clothing sales, toy and gift sales, beauty product sales, shoe sales, grocery sales and slipper sales.

Alejandra indicates that she’s been a member of a communal bank for four years. Currently, she has a business selling gifts and toys that she’s had for years having learned it from her brother-in-law. The loan this cycle is to increase working capital. She will buy toys and gifts in street markets to then resell in an ambulatory fashion (no fixed stand). This way of working allows her to support her family since she’s married and has a son.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the credit training and the health services.

Due to cultural reasons, Rosario does not appear in the photo.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
