Maria
Maria is a single mother and head of household with three children for whom she wants to provide the best lifestyle possible. Approximately 25 years ago she took a sewing course and learned the skill very well. Since then she has been sewing for a living and generating an income for her household. For 15 years she worked for two clothing manufacturing companies but decided to work for herself because she felt she was not paid well. In order to generate more income she set up her own sewing workshop where she works for third parties and also has her own line. She is able to generate employment for people who need it most when her sales increase significantly. Therefore, she not only provides a better lifestyle for her own family but also for people in the industry who are most in need. In order to increase production capacity, Maria is seeking a loan to buy an overlock sewing machine and sewing supplies.

Maria wants to be able to have a work tool on hand for another worker which she will need shortly. Also, she hopes the increase in sales will improve her children's quality of life and provide more opportunities to get ahead.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
