Ni Komang Mahyuni Loan Update

Entrepreneur: Ni Komang Mahyuni -
Location: Melaya, Bali, Indonesia

Komang Mahyuni, 42, is in the business of making and selling traditional Balinese cakes which are used for daily purposes but also for Hindu offerings and festivals. She lives with her husband and 2 sons on a plot of land she inherited from her parents. She used her loan to make bulk purchases of the necessary ingredients to make her cakes. These include: eggs, white flour, rice flour, butter, and sugar. She also bought some new mixing bowls and kitchen utensils. Each day she produces about 100 of the small cakes in a small kitchen attached to the side of her house. She does not sell the cakes herself; rather, she has 4 clients who purchase the cakes directly from her to be sold in their kiosks at the daily market in Negarra. Since receiving the loan she is able to produce more cakes, thereby increasing her sales and profits. On average she makes about 40,000 – 50,000 Rp. ($4-5) profit per day. Mahyuni’s business is somewhat depended on the Hindu festivals and during these busy times she will - with help from her sons - produce between 200-300 cakes per day. All the profit she makes from the cake selling business are used to cover daily living expenses to support her family, as well as to help pay for her sons’ education. She is even able to save a little bit. Mayhuni dreams of one day redoing her kitchen and adding new appliances, and has started saving for the renovations. This loan was made by the DINARI Foundation in Bali, Indonesia. DINARI stands for “Dian Bhuana Lestari”, which means “lights that shine throughout the world.” The Foundation works to reduce poverty, stimulate small business development, and raise awareness about environmental issues.
