In this Group: Lilliam , Ileana, Andrea, Ingrid, Jenny, Maria Elena, Damaris, Francisca
Ileana is the treasurer of Banco Mujer Exitosas (Successful Women's Bank). At thirty year of age, she is the mother of two daughters, a 4 year old and a two year old, with whom she lives along with her life partner. She is a very enterprising woman and has worked in various areas of commerce and service. She has a lot of business experience. Currently, she is working on the first steps of a micro-business of Choco-Bananos (frozen chocolate covered bananas), which consists of making and selling sweetened and filled bananas. The business is a family business and she works with her mom and a sister-in-law who are also group members.

This is the second loan that the group has requested and the loan will be invested in the remodeling of a facility, to prepare it as a small "factory" as well as to purchase supplies, such as freezers and other necessary supplies.

Ileana has to work very hard to complete the orders that are already being requested. She must get up at 3 in the morning in order to be able to work and also complete her household tasks, such as giving her daughters the care they require since they are very small.

She has many proposed goals and is determined to reach them. Among these goals are consolidating her business and converting it into a factory with a presence in the market, improving the financial condition of her family and the quality of life, but above all, is being a successful micro-business and an example for her daughters and other women in her community, demonstrating that everything can be achieved with effort and hard work.

Along with Ileana, there are 7 other members of the group who also work in small industry and commerce.

More information about this loan

In Costa Rica, funding for microfinance institutions is hard to come by, and many institutions find themselves having difficulty growing and reaching all the demand for loans that exist. Kiva works with Fundacion Mujer because it attends a very marginalized population in Costa Rica, with a specific focus on women. In addition to the loan, Fundacion Mujer provides specialized training programs for their borrowers on everything from computer classes to salon training. Because of the difficulty in obtaining capital in Costa Rica, Fundacion Mujer cannot serve all the women that need loans. Therefore Kiva plays a unique role in helping Fundacion Mujer grow its portfolio and reach borrowers it otherwise would not be able to.

About Fundacion Mujer:

Fundación Mujer is an organization specializing in the financial and personal development of female entrepreneurs in Costa Rica. They seek to reach underserved populations that may include indigenous communities, immigrants, refugees, victims of domestic violence or women living with HIV/AIDS. Fundación Mujer offers courses in both business and personal development, as well as training in concrete skills such as sewing and other crafts.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
