Gideon is a father of five adult children and has been in farming for close to 20 years with farming income being his family’s sole source of livelihood. His farm is run with the help of one farmhand and produces pigs, maize and beans for the local market.
Gideon has requested a loan of 60,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy piglets and build a housing unit for his growing number of pigs. He says he has decided to expand the pig business due to the availability of a market for his products. He adds that he is also focusing on improving the state of his residential building with the farming income.
However, he points out the inaccessibility of external markets as the major challenge as farmers generally get low returns within the local markets.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
