Beatrice has been in farming for 11 years in her home area of Kitale where she lives with her family of four children between 18 and 6 years old. She says farming is her main source of income but she supplements it with her cereals retail business.
Beatrice has requested a loan of 30,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy poultry birds. She says she wants to diversify her farming business in order to raise more income for the education of the children and to provide supplementary meals in addition to the regular income from maize and beans sales. She wants to have a farm of not less than 2,000 birds.
She points to the undeveloped local markets as the challenge to a great number of farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
