Elizabeth is aged 43 and has been in active farming in her rural home of Kitale in Western Kenya for over 25 years. Her farm currently supplies the local market with milk, maize and beans, giving the family their basic requirements with the income realized. She currently employs one farmhand.
Elizabeth has requested a loan of 41,600 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She says this will boost her farming income and enable her family to have better living standards. She emphasizes the increased number of her dairy cows will also help provide bio-gas which will significantly reduce their fuel expenditure.
She however notes that poor infrastructure and animal diseases remain their daunting challenge. She is still optimistic business will grow and provide better living standards for the family.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
