Update on Jhony Gilmer

Jhony, aged 35, is a hard-working young man and the family father of two children. The family lives in El Porvenir, a rural hamlet whose residents work exclusively in farming and cattle breeding. The hamlet belongs to the district of Olmos, one hour from the city of Chiclayo. It is located in a developing area and electricity is the sole public utility to which it is connected so far.

Jhony's activity consists in transporting passengers between the villages of the area. With the savings from his job as an agricultural laborer he bought a vehicle, which he runs from Monday to Saturday from early morning to late evening. His point of departure is in the district of Olmos, where he covers the route Olmos-Porvenir-Ñaupe. He has done this activity for the past four years and could thus support his wife and their two school-aged children.

Jhony is well aware that the roads in his area are badly damaged and have taken their toll on his vehicle. He must continuously have his car serviced and buy new tires to keep it in good condition and be able to work normally. Therefore he came to the microfinance institution Edpyme Alternativa and applied for a loan of 2000 new soles which he will use to service his vehicle and buy new tires.

Jhony has always been considered a hard worker with a high sense of responsibility. This is not only known by his relatives, but also by his neighbors who credit him with good references.

Concurrent and Successive Loans

Our Field Partners often work with borrowers over a series of loans as the borrowers build credit, take out bigger loans, and expand their businesses. In order to make it easier for our Field Partners to post loans for borrowers who have been listed on Kiva before, we allow them to post successive and concurrent loans for their Kiva borrowers. This means that our Field Partners are able to post a borrower's second, third, etc., loan on Kiva without having to re-enter all of the borrower's information.

This borrower has been listed on Kiva before, so you'll see an updated loan description, as well as excerpts of the original descriptions from earlier loans. Most borrowers take out loans consecutively, meaning that they receive a second loan after having repaid the first. However, sometimes our Field Partners give out concurrent loans, allowing borrowers to take out one primary loan and a secondary "add-on" loan along with it. These "add-on" loans are typically smaller than the borrower's primary loan and serve a different purpose. Because Field Partners can now post loans as successive and concurrent loans, you will be able to track borrower progress over time and see the various ways a borrower is working with our Field Partners through funds from Kiva’s lenders.
