Ruth is the mother of four children all of school-going age. She lives with her family in their home in Kitale where she has been farming for 15 years mainly producing maize and vegetables for the local market. She is aged 50. She earns additional income from a cereals processing plant and low cost rental houses in the local market.
Ruth has requested a loan of 62,400 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. This will improve her farming income as she ventures into dairy farming which will also provide milk for the family's consumption.
She faces the challenges of poor infrastructure and high cost of inputs.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
