Abednego is 55 and has been in farming for 15 years. He is married and has five children: two adults and three minors. He is currently running his farm with one farm hand and sells his produce of maize and vegetables in the local market. Besides farming, he runs a tailoring business.
Abednego has requested a loan of KES 36,400 from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He says the venture will spread his risk and provide necessary income and milk for family consumption. He is focusing more on his dairy business because of the constant demand for dairy products in the market.
He is aware of the challenge posed by fluctuations in market prices but remains optimistic that he will surmount them.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
