"Geminis" is a communal bank from the municipallity of Hidalgo, a small pueblo to the north of Nuevo Leon. They are seven hardworking women who have just received their second loan. Priscilla is the leader and president of the group. She is married and has a five-year-old son named Jhonary who attends kindergarten.

One year ago her husband began having financial difficulties and his income was not sufficient to cover family expenses. At that time Priscilla made the decision that, in addition to managing the household, she should start up some new business which would allow her to support her husband with the household costs.

Priscilla decided to begin selling silver jewelry, a very profitable business which allows her the opportunity to gain extra income. Additionally this work would allow her to work from home and not neglect her home nor her family which is her primary motivation for getting ahead in the business. Priscilla stocks up once a month and the earnings she receives from her sales are double what she spends.

With this loan she hopes to purchase more merchandise for stocking up and thus be able to sell more products to more customers. She hopes to continue to sell more and more each day and someday, to have others under her supervision who help her to make the sales. Thus she hopes little by little to become one of the major providers in the area.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
