Elsa Maria
View original language description ↓
Elsa, 32, lives in Managua's Memorial Sandino neighborhood. She's married and her husband earns a modest wage working for the Nicaraguan army. They have two young children, a one-year old and a three-year old. With their senior years in mind, they've set up a business, started by Elsa, selling light meals: fried pork, hamburgers and cold drinks. She's managed to operate the business for 8 years now. With the income from the business, Elsa has been able to improve her house little by little. It's walls aren't made of concrete, though, and the makeshift electricals are old. This loan will help her make additional improvements.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
