Presented to you in the photo above is Mariatu, a primary school teacher in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone. Mariatu has been a professional teacher for nine years. A native of Makeni city, Mariatu is 35 years old. She is married to a teacher and the couple has two children. Her children attend primary and secondary schools.
Mariatu has requested this loan to pay her college fees. At the end of each month, she will repay the loan, using her monthly salary.

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities.
