Carlos Luis
Carlos Luis is 60 years old and lives with his family in the community of Santa Teresita, Cartago province. The city of Cartago was founded in 1563 by the Spanish conquistador Juan Vazquez de Coronado. It served as capital of Costa Rica until 1823, and was the seat of the first Permanent International Court in the history of the world, the Cartago Court. It's mountainous landscape is formed by two mountain chains: the Central and the Talamanca cordilleras.

Carlos Luis has the motivation and the aid of his family members, and that helps him continue with his life and his work. In addition, it is very important to make changes in his store, since demand is ever stronger and the residents of the community have been satisfied with the services he offers.

What Carlos Luis requests at this moment is a micro-loan of 600,000 colons to buy construction materials for improvements in his place of work, and to provide better maintenance and possible assistance for his business.

Carlos Luis is a part of the “Empresa de Credito Comunal (Communal Credit Enterprise) de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba,” one of the 150 organizations belonging to EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his 1st loan and he says that with this he hopes to be able to continue growing as a micro-entrepreneur and advance his business. Also, he points out that thanks to these types of organizations and means of financing loans, borrowers can dedicate more time to productive activities.

Carlos Luis tiene 60 años de edad y vive con su familia en la comunidad de Santa Teresita, en la provincia de Cartago. La Ciudad de Cartago fue fundada en 1563 por el conquistador español Juan Vázquez de Coronado, fungió como capital de Costa Rica hasta 1823 y fue sede de la primera corte internacional permanente de la historia mundial, la Corte de Cartago. Su relieve montañoso está formado por dos cordilleras: la Central y la cordillera de Talamanca.

Carlos Luis tiene la motivación y la ayuda de sus familiares, lo cual le facilita seguir con su vida y su trabajo. Además le es muy importante hacer este cambio en su local, ya que la demanda es cada vez más fuerte y los vecinos de la comunidad se han sentido satisfechos con el servicio brindado.

Lo que en estos momentos solicita Carlos Luis es un micro crédito de ¢600,000 (seiscientos mil colones), para comprar materiales de construcción para el arreglo de su lugar de trabajo, y para dar el mejor mantenimiento y asistencia posible a su negocio.

Carlos Luis forma parte de la Empresa de Crédito Comunal de El Sauce de Santa Teresita Turrialba, una de las 150 organizaciones socias de EDESA en Costa Rica. Este será su primer crédito y dice que con esto espera poder seguir creciendo como microempresario y sacar su negocio adelante. También destaca que gracias a este tipo de organizaciones y medios facilitadores de crédito puede dedicar más tiempo a las actividades productivas.

As a small and relatively young MFI located in Costa Rica, EDESA has difficulty attracting other sources of capital. Many other microfinance funders do not work in Costa Rica, because overall the country is too rich. However, organizations such as EDESA work with extremely marginalized populations in Costa Rica that really need the access to capital that EDESA provides. By funding EDESA, Kiva lenders are allowing the organization to grow and reach more people than they otherwise would be able to reach.
