Andrew is a resident of Kitale and has been in farming for six years, producing and selling milk, maize and horticultural products. He also runs a taxi business and a retail shop in the local market. He is married with six children aged between 12 and 5 years. He is aged 36.
Andrew has requested a loan of 80,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to help him venture into poultry farming. He says he will use 40,000 KES to build a housing unit and the rest to buy poultry birds. He says the poultry business has a faster turnover and he will be able to raise income to repay the loan and take care of his family by providing basic needs like meals and education for the children.
He lists the high cost of production as well as animal diseases and lack of markets, especially for the dairy products, as the leading challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
