Patrick is a farmer in Kitale. He is aged 52 years, and married with seven children. The first born is 18 years old, and the last born is only four months. He has been in farming for five years, and his produce of maize, sugarcane, beans, and milk are sold within the local market.
Patrick has requested a loan of 31,200 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. He says this will give a boost to his farming income and enable him to easily provide the basic family needs. He hopes to increase the number of his dairy cows.
Patrick lists animal diseases, high cost of feed, and unreliable rains as the leading challenges.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
