When Kadriye decided to start her own business, she separated from her husband. She moved in with her father because she felt it was her duty to provide the good educational support and living standards that her daughter (now 11 years old) needed. She couldn’t earn enough money while working for someone else so she found a shop and rented it, but she didn’t have enough money to buy the equipment she needed.
With Maya's help, she was able to purchase the equipment she needed and opened her own beauty shop. Kadriye was able to pay off her one year loan in only six months. Later on she applied for and received another loan from Maya to buy dyes, other beauty supplies, and a waxing table. She was also able to pay her second loan off early.
Kadriye is currently applying for her third loan with Maya through Kiva. With this loan, she will buy natural hair dyes, make-up products, and other beauty supplies that will help expand services and improve her beauty parlor. She has achieved a lot in the two years since starting her own business and is dedicated to keep working towards bettering it. Business is good and with this loan she believes that she will achieve her dream of expanding her business.

Although Turkey is one of the largest economies in the region, it has not reached its potential for microfinance investment. Deficient legal structures for microfinance credit initiatives and lack of quality information about microfinance demand and structure in Turkey are the largest obstacles to improvements in the field. Under these challenging conditions, Maya provides group and individual loans to low-income women who lack access to the financial services they need in order to start or improve their own small-scale businesses. Maya borrowers are part of lending groups, but are posted to Kiva as individuals. Therefore, lenders are exposed to additional risk of default in the event that a member of this borrower's group defaults on her loan. Maya, established in 2002, was Turkey’s first microcredit program. Maya is Kiva’s first Field Partner in Turkey and posted its first loans in August 2011. Headquartered in Istanbul, Maya has four branch offices. For more information, visit Maya’s partner page.
