Winjoy is a resident and farmer in Nkubu, Central Kenya. She is 30 years old, married and has three children aged seven, two and under one year. She has been in farming for over ten years and runs a cereals processing service besides farming.
Winjoy has requested a loan of 52,000 KES from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She says she will use the extra income to improve the living standards of her family by providing for the family's basic needs. She will also save the rest of the income for the consistent improvement of her farming business.
She notes that insufficient water supply, animal diseases and pests are the perennial challenges she faces in farming. Winjoy appreciates the financial support from Juhudi Kilimo.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
