The committee is called "Mujeres al Poder" [Women To Power] and is in its fifth loan cycle with 17 members. It is a group of very responsible and hardworking women who make the effort every day in order to change their families' lives. They joined together with the goal of getting ahead and of growing, not only financially but as people.

One very hardworking woman is Sara who devotes herself to washing clothes. She comments that her work is very demanding since she washes a large amount of clothing every day and it is quite exhausting. Nevertheless she tells us she does not get tired because by her work she has been able to help her family and get them ahead. She says that her work is quite dignifying and above all, honest.

She asks for help from the foundation and from Kiva so that she may buy fabric softeners, powdered soaps, disinfectant and other items she uses in the washing of the clothes.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
