The Las Positivas community bank has 8 members--men and women--and has been associated with Programa-Prosperidad for 2 years. Mercedes, 37, is separated and has 3 children, the youngest of whom is still in her care. Mercedes operates a corner grocery where she sells the kinds of products that her customers need every day. She also makes prepared foods--wings, salchipapas and hamburgers--that she sells in the evenings. The businesses are her means of making a living and providing for her child. Mercedes wants to continue growing the business so that she can go on supporting her son. She will use this loan to buy merchandise--soft drinks, water, snacks, rice, sugar, milk, etc.--that she will resell. The Las Positivas community bank is grateful to Kiva lenders for supporting their efforts to get ahead.

This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
