The committee “Paz y Unidad,” or “Peace and Unity,” began through promotions that took place in the members’ neighborhood. They are all neighbors and friends in the neighborhood. They made it their goal to work, fomenting a spirit of solidarity among each member, and carry their program out to its fullest potential.

Margarita is the president of the group. She sells “chipa,” (a Paraguayan traditional food) [a cheese bread often made with corn or manioc flour]. She says that she is driven to make progress and to work to help her family, since they are her reason for fighting. One of her wishes is to continue growing to earn a little more income.

She is requesting the loan to purchase starch, lard, eggs, seasoning, and other ingredients necessary to make the chispa that she sells.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
