The “Las Flores de Progreso” (Flowers of Progress) communal bank will start its first cycle in Pro Mujer as part of the Panamericana focal center. It has six members led by a governing board headed by Bertha, its President. The businesses that the members of the communal bank are in are varied. Among them we have: bakery, general store/stationery shop, popular games, neighborhood store and fish sales.

Bertha indicates that this is the first time she’s worked with Pro Mujer and that she joined the institution thanks to an invitation from a promoter. She currently has a bakery that she’s been operating for years having learned it from her parents.

The loan she’ll take out now is to increase capital. She will buy flour in La Ceja or in Desaguadero and after making the baked goods will sell them in her sales space. This way of working allows her to generate resources to support her family since she’s married and has two children. When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she answers that she likes the training.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
